Does Your Car Need an Emissions Test This Year?
Utah requires emissions inspections in five counties: Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, and Cache. If your vehicle is registered in one of them, the test is part of renewing your registration — you can't renew without it.
Salt Lake County uses an age-based schedule, and this is the part that confuses people every year:

The even/odd rule, worked out: a 2022 model year is an even year, so it gets tested in even-numbered calendar years. A 2021 is odd, so it gets tested in odd-numbered years. Utah Dropped the Safety Inspection — But Not Emissions
This trips people up constantly. As of January 1, 2018, Utah no longer requires an annual safety inspection on private passenger vehicles. Commercial vehicles still need one every year.
Emissions is a completely separate requirement, and it did not go away. If you're in Salt Lake County and it's your test year, you still need it to renew.

What to Bring
- The vehicle itself
- Your current registration or the renewal notice the state mailed you
- Your driver license
- Proof of Utah insurance
- A payment method for the state registration fees and taxes
- If you just bought the vehicle: the title or the paperwork showing you own it
One thing to check first: if your check engine light is on, the vehicle will generally fail — the on-board diagnostics report the fault directly to the test. Bring it in before your renewal deadline so there's time to read the code and fix it.
If Your Car Fails
A failed test isn't a dead end, it's a diagnosis. The advantage of testing at a real repair shop instead of a test-only station is that everything after the failure happens in one place:

Don't Wait Until the Last Week of the Month
