Brakes almost always warn you before they fail. The trick is knowing which warning is “book it this week” and which is “stop driving now.” Here's how we read them:

The one that costs the most to ignore: squealing means pads. Grinding means the pads are gone and you're now cutting into the rotor with every stop. Waiting from squeal to grind is what turns a pad job into a pad-and-rotor job — sometimes on all four corners.

This is where brake quotes go sideways. Some shops replace rotors on every brake job because it's easier and it pads the ticket. Rotors have a stamped minimum thickness, and the honest answer depends on a measurement:

The cheap way to stay ahead of it: have the pads measured whenever the car's already on a lift for an oil change. You'll know how much life is left instead of finding out from a noise.
Road salt and slush are hard on brake hardware here. Corroded caliper slides and seized parking-brake cables show up every spring, and they cause uneven pad wear that looks like a pad problem but isn't. If your car sat through a Salt Lake winter and now pulls or drags, say so when you call — it changes what we look at first.

What the sounds mean, and what a brake job actually involves.

It depends far more on how you drive than on mileage. Stop-and-go city driving, canyon driving, towing, and hard braking all shorten pad life a lot compared with steady freeway miles. No. If the rotors are still above minimum thickness and aren't warped, scored, or cracked, they can often be resurfaced or reused. If they're under minimum, they have to go — a rotor that's too thin can't shed heat and will warp. We measure and show you the numbers instead of replacing by default.
A light squeak on the first couple of cold-morning stops, or after driving through water, is usually surface rust or dust and clears in a stop or two. A squeal that keeps happening under normal braking is worth checking — it can mean a wear indicator is touching the rotor, a pad is glazed, or hardware isn't moving freely.
